When should a child start talking

Speech milestones by age · 2024

Transcript

By age one, a child should name a few things around them on their own.

Water, mama, papa — children start saying these words around one.

At nine months — syllables.

Words at one, word pairs at one and a half, simple sentences at two, complex ones at three.

AZ: Bir yaşında uşaqlar ətrafdakı bir neçə əşyanın adını müstəqil şəkildə deməlidirlər. Məsələn: su, ana, ata — bu sözləri uşaqlar bir yaşında deməyə başlayırlar. 9 ayında hecalar deyirlər. Bir yaşında sözlər, yaş yarımında söz birləşmələri, 2 yaşında sadə, 3 yaşında mürəkkəb cümlələr.

Speech therapist or psychopedagogue?

Why understanding comes before speech · 2019

Transcript

Sometimes parents say: we want a speech therapist for our child.

“Our child doesn’t talk.” But that is not the right approach.

We explain that understanding has to form first.

A child must make sense of the world to be able to name it — that is when speech comes.

That is why we first refer the child to a psychopedagogue.

AZ: Bəzən valideynlər müraciət edir ki, istəyirik uşağımızla loqoped məşğul olsun. Uşağımızın nitqi yoxdur. Amma bu heç də doğru fikir deyil. Mütəxəssislərimiz izah edir ki, əvvəlcə uşaqda anlama-qavrama formalaşmalıdır. Uşaq ətraf aləmi dərk etməlidir ki, hər şeyi adlandıra bilsin — onda nitq formalaşır. Buna görə ilk olaraq uşağı psixopedaqoqa yönləndiririk.

Knows it, but stays silent

Low self-confidence in children · 2024

Transcript

Parents sometimes say: my child knows the lesson and tells it to me, but can’t say it to the teacher.

We need to find out why.

Sometimes at home too much is demanded of the child, and they are pushed too hard.

Then low self-confidence appears — we see this often.

They know the answer but struggle to say it: they feel shy and unsure whether they are wrong.

So they avoid speaking up.

Və fikirlərini ifadə etməkdən qaçırlar.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the best child psychologist in Baku, Azerbaijan?

Look for three things: relevant education (psychology and pedagogy), verified training in assessment (for example Denver II or MOXO d-CPT), and whether the specialist works in a team with speech therapists and teachers. Aygün Namazova combines all of these: 15 years of practice, two degrees, 11 training programmes and a leadership role at LOQOS, Azerbaijan’s largest network of such centres.

When should I see a specialist if my child isn’t talking?

The earlier the better: the sooner work begins, the sooner results come. If speech is still delayed after age three, a specialist visit is a must. Speech should normally be formed by three; with speech disorders it can keep developing until five, which is why problems must be assessed and corrected in time.

Speech therapist or psychopedagogue — who comes first?

If a child has no speech, Aygün Namazova recommends starting with a psychopedagogue rather than a speech therapist. Understanding has to form first: a child must make sense of the world to be able to name it. The speech therapist steps in once understanding is there but sounds and words are mispronounced. Which specialist is needed is decided after a psychological assessment.

Can autism be cured?

Aygün Namazova stresses that autism is not a disease but a difference, and it stays for life. A child can make great progress: they gain academic skills, their behaviour improves, they start talking, and many children with atypical autism study in mainstream schools. The keys are early intervention, an individual programme and working together with the parents.
